The real disaster is in the country
Nimbyism is costly in the cities where it now has a foothold , but its most unaffordable in the country where every dollar counts; where you really need each other to work together to fight common enemies ; where you can do wihout a personal fight based on protecting yourself and your livelihood from unwelcome intrusions.Government has created and fostered this isolation and blatant indifferenece to regional planning imperatives . It wasn't long ago when the states and the feds would mediate regional planning - now they just wash their hands of it or run around saying "we need more research" before we know its a problem - complete incompetence in both ledaership and those who pretend to practice risk management in the bush .
It only takes blind freddie a few second s to work out that a poly driven investment is real winner for most of us who are quicker than they are with money they don't have .
The big disaster for sound use of Australia's resources in this, is the hamfisted way in which tax breaks work to create change in what is a very sensitive environment- our backyard . .The feds and the states never had a plan of when and where ( NHT have funded lots of others-- so why not this ?) They have stopped those of us who tried to make that discussion happen, and, as predicted they are too slow to stop the quick and lively from making a grand quickbuck out of their slowness and carelessness with our money .
The big hammers were brought out to create big monoliths of blue shaped monocultures in places where diversity of decision making is critical.Rural people are rightly agrieved at this political and environmental carelessness that continues to go on all around them; even blaming them when the are forced to adopt current government policy on planning - everyneighbour for himself (http://nimbyism.blogspot.com) Plantations now cover up and interfere with diversity where they could and should have protected it.
